Rave Magazine

Rave magazine is a magazine dedicated to ravers, music lovers, and creatives alike. Rave magazine fosters an inclusive environment and highlights the BIPOC pioneers in the house and techno music industry that paved the way for us to dance today. Rave magazine article include music selections, interviews, fashion, and history of the rave community.

House music started in Chicago and Detroit with well renowned DJ’s such as Jesse Saunders, Frankie Knuckles, Kerri Chandler and their Roland TB-303 bass synthesizers in the early 1980’s. With this they were able to create their own dance tracks which had remeinants of disco and soul which we now call house music.  The DJ’s in Chicago and Detroit “used machine music to process what it meant to live in decaying manufacturing and industrial cities”.  A lot of rave history can be traced backed to these “Rust Belt Cities” and they became a way for people to forget about the struggles many marginalized communities were facing at this time in these areas.

The magazine has a retro yet modern vibe that is achieved through its bold and pixelated typography, which evokes the sounds of house and techno music. To create this aesthetic, I attended numerous raves and captured photos using my old digital camera. I then incorporated color block overlays into the design to add an extra layer of visual interest and make the pages stand out with the use of color.
